Description:
Management of a production computing environment is all about the goals of Reliability, Availability and
Serviceability (RAS). These have been the benchmarks for evaluating system management practices since the
mainframe environments of the 1960s.
In order to attain the goals of RAS, we must seek to maximise predictability. The quest for predictability is fought
on three fronts; Standards, Processes and Technology (SPT).
In this paper I examine the processes that should be used to implement a total quality solution to the management
of mission-critical production environments, specifically the Change Management and Production Acceptance
processes.

Basic experience in supporting a production environment.

Bio:
Geoff Halprin is the Principal Consultant at The SysAdmin Group.
He has been a system administrator for the past 15 years, and
a consulting system administrator for over 10.
Geoff specialises in data security and systems management
disciplines, and in the evaluation and improvement of systems
management practices. He has consulted to a wide variety of
organisations, including government, large corporations, and
several major ISPs.
Geoff is also the Vice-President of the System Administrator's
Guild of Australia (SAGE-AU).
