Introduction to the Linux / Unix Command Line Jon Lasser
Topic: UNIX Audience: Beginners
Description: This talk introduces basic principles of Linux and/or Unix usage for someone with no Unix experience. It covers reading man pages, including decoding the abtruse 'syntax' statements crucial to effectively using Unix documentation; files and how Unix thinks about files; and redirection and pipes, the heart of the Unix way of doing things. This talk is based on the first three chapters of my book, Think Unix.
Prerequisites: This talk is geared at people new to the Unix command line but with some PC, Mac, or GUI-only Unix experience.
History: I've presented this talk at Colorado Linux Info Quest (CLIQ) in March 2001 and at the Columbia, MD Linux Users Group in May 2001.

Bio: Jon is Senior System Administrator at SkyNetWEB, a subsidiary of Affinity Internet Inc., and has been working with Linux and Unix since 1993. He is the author of Think Unix, an introduction to Unix for experienced computer users, and is lead coordinator for the Bastille Linux Project, a hardening script for several Linux distributions. Jon has taught the SANS GIAC GSEC level one certification course at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and is at present unofficial meeting instigator for the Old Bay SAGE (Baltimore, MD) group.
