This talk covers the basics of computer security, geared towards new or part-time system administrators. The talk includes a discussion of the definition of security, a brief look at defining threat models, and the basic techniques that can be used to keep hackers out of systems.

Prerequisites:
The audience should be familiar with basic TCP/IP concepts and should have strong user-level experience on the Unix command line.

This talk has been presented three times at LinuxWorld Expo: February 2000 (New York), August 2000 (San Jose), February 2001 (New York).

Bio:
Jon is Senior System Administrator at SkyNetWEB, a subsidiary of Affinity Internet Inc., and has been working with Linux and Unix since 1993. He is the author of Think Unix, an introduction to Unix for experienced computer users, and is lead coordinator for the Bastille Linux Project, a hardening script for several Linux distributions. Jon has taught the SANS GIAC GSEC level one certification course at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and is at present unofficial meeting instigator for the Old Bay SAGE (Baltimore, MD) group.
