The RFC for host naming conventions is a great guide!

Encoding things into a host name is wrong.  Use software tools and some kind
of database for that!  I can't believe how hard it is to convince people of
this!

I've seen a lot of convoluted schemes.  The most enjoyable is when users pick
their own host names, with minor guidelines.  We have work groups which stick to
themes.  One group uses musical instrument names, another uses beers; one group 
just uses names that start with the letter Z. All that's encoded with these
kinds 
of host names is fun :-)
