EU governments to give law enforcement agencies access to allcommunications data
Folks,
For those members of SAGE (or SAGE-related organizations) living
in Europe, this has the potential to be far, far worse than HR1542.
From <http://www.statewatch.org/news/2001/may/03Aenfopol.htm>:
EU governments to give law enforcement agencies access to all
communications data
* EU laws on data protection and privacy to be reviewed to
meet demands of the "agencies" for access to all
telecommunications content and traffic data
* The Council of the European Union to back retention and
archiving of all phone-calls, e-mails, faxes, internet
usage and websites for up to seven years
* "ENFOPOL 98" to go through EU Justice and Home Affairs
Council at the end of May: extending surveillance to
mobile phones, internet usage and websites
* Statewatch denied access to documents because disclosure
"could impede the efficiency of ongoing deliberations"
Even if you do not yourself live in Europe, if you know of
someone who does, this almost certainly affects them. Unfortunately,
the time frame is very, very short, and immediate action is needed.
Myself, I am disenfranchised both in my country of citizenship,
and my country of residence. I do not have someone who represents me
in government in either country, nor do I have a vote in who gets
elected to government in either country. All I can do is try to
raise the alarm.
