This really does come back to "don't use corporate email for private
purposes". The employer does own the contents of that mailbox, and
are within their rights to examine it[0] -at any time-.
For crying out loud - why do people -STILL- insist on getting private
mail at work, when it's cheap[1] and easy to get a mailbox of their
own?
...and why are they also surprised that leaving a job has consequences?
[not necessarily limited to their email - a phone call by the banker
in the previous example is going to result in "I'm sorry - <foo> doesn't
work here anymore"]
