Re: [SAGE] Linux Backup Software -- HELP needed in finding a reasonable one
Oh, and to add a couple of things...
If all of your backup client machines are Linux based, both now and in the
foreseenable future (next 24 months) then it may be overkill to get one of
the top enterprise backup software if you're pretty sure you'd be an
one-platform-shop for a while.
Amanda or other open source solutions may make sense as does one of the
smaller scale software.
I'd completely forgotten that two jobs ago (an all-Linux shop even in the
1.0.9 kernel days), we used BRU once our needs outgrew tar. I think it was
fine... don't know if it's still sold/supported/maintained, but the price
back then certainly was exactly right for the small startup where I worked
at the time (10 years ago as of last month).
I think I did see a mention of BRU in a Linux magazine about a year or two
ago, and its price was still decent then. I don't know what the other
inexpensive commercial backup software that runs on Linux are, offhand,
without looking it up. I don't recall what BRU's limitations are, but it's
certainly easier to manage a setup like yours with it than cobbling stuff
together from scratch.
I can also vouch for Mr. Preston's book even though I don't own a copy; I
remember his research while he was writing it, and he does a lot of work
with various solutions and does talks about them (IIRC). He's pretty much
"Dr. Backup" ;)
