My experience has been that, admin-wise, HP-UX is different
enough that some SysV skills will transfer over, but not all. They
certainly have some proprietary stuff that they use for managing
patch depots (and applying patches and packages), etc....
That said, my last encounter with HP-UX was several years ago,
during the transition from HP-UX 10.20 to 10.30 and 11.0. I have no
real idea what things look like today.
If possible, I'd try to find an older HP box on eBay that allows
you to install the latest OS, etc... and then see what you can get
from HP to support that. Or try to find someone who has HP boxes
today who might be willing to give you an account.
I know that DEC/Compaq had a program a while back where you could
test-drive Alpha hardware (you could download stuff, compile it, run
it, etc... but you couldn't do any communications back out of the
box), and they might have the same sorts of facilities available for
HP-UX.
