Re: [SAGE] Chuck Yerkes has passed away
I'm very sorry to hear the sad news. Biggest jolt in quite a while.
I didn't know Mr. Yerkes as well as many of you here did nor for as
long, but can say that his insightful, suggestive, and often humorous
posts were much appreciated.
I agreed with his points more often than not, but couldn't hold it
personally against him when I disagreed because of the way he put it. A
true and consummate professional with much experience and a willingness
to help at a moment's notice, which was very obvious.
To those who may think they were cheated by this 'untimely' event, I can
only say that, from my perspective, there is no such thing as a lifetime
that was too short if it was well spent in the company of friends...
which seems to be indeed true in his case.
I have a sneaking suspicion that he's probably somewhere else, just as
alive and well as ever, and working on engineering an interesting
installation and throwing in some more jokes about how long it takes to
wait -- such that one could even train one's pet to do something complex
in the time it took to wait for an OS install to complete. ;) (ref: an
openbsd-misc post.) Maybe even discussing some proposed idea with The
Ultimate Engineer?
I would definitely be interested in contributing towards an award,
memorial fund, or whatever form it takes. Is there anything I can
personally do to make it a reality, on my part? If so, just send me
email off-list or send a more detailed request for help to sage-members
once more fully hashed out.
Did he have family? They might appreciate a note on what Chuck meant at
the individual level, or some funny or good thing he's done, for it'd
help build more memories to hold on to. Never a bad thing to let them
know how loved and appreciated one was (and still is).
If so, a mailing address might be appropriate if permission is given to
disseminate, or to gather these at the SAGE office and forward them in a
package to the family.
Respectfully,
-Dan
