Steve, thanks for posting this. I consider my own qualifications as
rather less stellar than yours, but I've also experienced similar
issues. I found my last couple of contracts through previous employers
and/or coworkers. I can honestly say that the most valuable part of
this kind of referral is being able to bypass the lowest level of the
interview process.
Things like listing the flags on the 'find' command to do XYZ have to be
paged in from archive memory or looked up via 'man' these days. The
flip side is that I can sit down and off the top of my head write a 3
page document on how to construct a golden master production and testlab
environment with reasonable change control procedures, or a baseline
project plan skeleton for a major data center move.
But that won't get you through a technical screening interview where
folks don't believe you could design the above if you don't know the
contents of the CVS wrapper-of-the-week server config file. Oy.
