I'm curious what you didn't like about Amanda?  It's fairly simple to
set up, extremely configurable and flexible, and works with most every
OS out there.  The amanda-users mailing list is a great resource, and
very helpful, and there are several on this list who can help out as
well.

That being said, if you only care about making sure changes you make
are backed up, a fairly simple solution could be to put everything you
care about under a centralized revision control system (cvs, svn,
perforce, bitkeeper, etc.) and just back up the central repository.

Doing this is very simple and straightforward, and revision control is
something you really, really want to do anyway :)
