Others have already pointed out the advantage of using a
directory over a single file.  i've taken things a step
further with a tool that is cross-platform and gives me
various generic features that most cron jobs need.  Most of
our users have adopted it which i take as a sign that it's
good/useful.

Then, there's always the likes of autosys..
