I've seen good sysadmins that were bad programmers, good sysadmins that were good programmers, good programmers that were good sysadmins and good programmers that were bad sysadmins.

The most common intersection is good at one and mediocre at the other; not for lack of intelligence, but for lack of practice and thinking about things in the right way). Remember, it takes many years to be an expert in a field (the common wisdom is 5-10)
